Charlotte and Oliver are those 1 in 4. They’ve known what it is to experience baby loss. Every pregnancy they’ve conceived, they’ve lost. There’s no reasoning to it, but Charlotte’s body cannot stay pregnant. It’s killing the couple – Oliver treads on eggshells around his wife and Charlotte cannot bear to see her husband grieving in the quiet of his office. What is it going to take to have a baby or is this cycle of pain destined to continue?

The Willows is their dream home. After receiving a handsome inheritance from Charlotte’s deceased parents after a car accident, they purchase the palatial gothic home. It needs a lot of work. The window shutters are hanging, the roof has missing slates and a boarded-up basement. The couple know they have a lot of work ahead of them, but the real question is what else have they inherited? Strange dreams and frightening visions plague Charlotte, so what else is harbouring in The Willows or are they just Marked for Sorrow?

Hauntingly Beautiful

What a huge difference this book is from You Are Going to Die Here! YM Miller proving she has the chops to bring on the hurt in any form of the genre of horror! This story is as creepy as it is heartbreaking. And just as it should be in horror, there is no happy ending. I enjoyed this story a lot, it had some great immersive moments. I think the only part that drew me out was some repetitiveness in describing one of the characters and over use of the word(variations of) ominous. Outside of those the story is intense in the sorrow and grief and shows how much those can affect a person's perception of situations and their psyche. Thank you YM Miller for sharing this story! It will probably make me look at showers differently for a long time to come lol. I highly recommend this for those who enjoy a haunted house story.

Haunted House, Haunted History

Notes from a Decaying Millennial: I was lucky enough to have the author reach out to me with the opportunity to be an early reviewer of this book. This is not a Paid Review - Marked For Sorrow is the forthcoming Gothic Horror novella from Scottish writer Y.M. Miller. Prior to reading this novella, my only direct experience with the writings of Y.M. Miller was their recent Extreme Horror novella You Are Going to Die Here .( If you want to see me thoughts on that book, please see me review). One hallmark of an excellent author is their ability to craft unique stories while maintain their style and "writers voice" with each one. Marked for Sorrow demonstrates Miller's ability to do just that. Their gift for crafting characters that feel alive and deeply human is also, in the end what so effectively breaks the readers heart., This a true work of Gothic Horror, with the unique flavor only found in Scotland. The tragedy and sadness that befalls the Fraser's at the outset is only the first faint touch from a cold hand that by story's end has crushed the Fraser's and the reader. Just as in Miller's previous works, the landscape of rural Scotland is almost a character in itself. The Fraser's home and the grounds surrounding it resonate with history and dread. Miller delivers to the reader a Haunted House Tale, steeped in the history of the region and its folklore. In this tale, what lurks is more than the echoes of the dead, lingering within the confines of a few walls. Miller's story deals directly and deeply with the loss and grief which comes with the loss of pregnancy and children. This is a topic which may be hard for some readers to deal with. I will fully admit that it certainly evoked memories and emotions from recent years for myself, but in doing so it strengthened my connection with the characters, and made my investment in the story that much deeper.

For those that love a gut punch of a book

So for those that love a gut punch of a book, another amazing book, (even if I am blatantly biased), so I've added screenshots of some other people's review's. But this one really is, for those that know what we have been through in the last while, will understand once having read this , how much of her heart and soul Yvonne put into this. And the results are a beautifully written but macabre and unique story combining the dangers of pregnancy and some supernatural activity to add a bit of spice, Couldn't recommend it more if you like a good horror.

Feel the Fear

For those who loved Haunting of Hill House and enjoy horror based on mythology, this is 5 stars; a must read. You are transported to the highlands of Scotland where the mountains shadow valleys of moorlands that are often blanketed in eerie fogs-giving the ultimate ambiance and air of mystery. There you meet Charlotte and Oliver, a grief stricken couple, brought together by a love of the macabre, who begin living out an unbelievable horror; one that should only exist in movies and books. I loved this. I am partial to horror with real-world influences- so this is a masterpiece that I thoroughly enjoyed crying over. Will I be looking over my shoulder for days on end following this read? Yes. Was it worth it? YES.
